All You Need To Know Before Travelling In A Plane With Your Kids

There’s a new debate cooking up on social media regarding kids on planes, and honestly, it’s hard to tell whether the outrage is truly warranted or just a clash of opinions designed to spark more chaos online. I’m sure many of you have felt that mix of exasperation and confusion whenever a new post goes viral, especially when people start laying down extreme opinions about traveling with children. You’ve got those who fly off the handle at the sight of a toddler and rant about how “no one under 12 should ever set foot on an airplane,” while others argue that families should only travel if they can drive. It leaves you wondering: how did we get here?

Enter a recent post from a smaller account on Threads that caught my eye. This person took aim at the practice of kids bringing roller bags onboard planes. They argued it’s an unwarranted use of space, insisting kids should only carry backpacks that slide under the seat. Just imagine that as a parent! Suddenly, you find yourself in the middle of a tidal wave of opinions that question whether your child can even carry their own belongings on vacation.

Instead of sharing empathy, the account implied that parents should simply check their child’s items or toss them into a larger bag for parent-child sharing. Seriously? This prompted my instinctual eye roll, a blend of disbelief and sarcasm. I considered chiming in with a cheeky suggestion: “Hey, great news! Just tell your kids to pack their whole vacation wardrobe into one little backpack—because, you know, kids can do that!”

Some responses to this outcry were pure gold. One user expressed their frustration perfectly, saying they’d flown over 200 times, yet it was adults— not kids—who tended to monopolize overhead space with large ill-placed bags and jackets. The fear of children has overshadowed the real problem: the annoying behaviors of adults.

Another user made a thoughtful counterpoint: the roller bag a child drags through the airport contains their essentials, keeping them engaged and occupied with snacks and toys, rather than loud cries or kicking seats. Plus, carrying heavy items can be tough for little hands! That tiny roller bag can empower kids during travel instead of burdening their weary parents.

At the core of this argument is a simple truth: a child’s ticket is just as valid as an adult’s. That ticket gives them the same right to carry on a piece of luggage—just like everyone else. Let’s be honest: if the kid has a valid ticket, why shouldn’t they bring their belongings onboard? What if they’re desiring a week-long beach getaway in a place where packing light just isn’t feasible? Or perhaps they have a special needs item stowed inside that can’t risk going under the plane?

These discussions keep surfacing, despite the fact that commercial airlines have been around for over a century—plenty of time for us to figure out how to coexist, parents and child-free travelers alike. Yet here we are, stuck in the same old debate: children on planes are entitled, but demanding a more comfortable flying experience is apparently an entirely different matter.

So, the next time this heated topic comes up, ask yourself: is it really about the kids, or is it the frustrations we all feel about cramped quarters and endless delays? Let’s focus on empathy and solutions instead of perpetuating a narrative that creates division. After all, we’re all just trying to get from point A to point B without losing our minds, aren’t we?
