Saline Solution Works As An Effective Cold Treatment For Children

Have you ever thought about an easy, budget-friendly method for helping your children recover more quickly from colds? A new study has sparked conversations among parents, indicating that a simple saline solution might accelerate recovery. Pediatric ER physician Dr. Beachgem, a mother of four, recently shared her thoughts on how hypertonic saline nasal drops could transform the experience of cold season for families.

This method not only has the potential to shorten the duration children feel unwell, but it may also lower the likelihood of other family members contracting the illness. Here’s what parents ought to know.

    Study Findings

This recent research, conducted by the University of Miami, focused on 407 children under the age of six. Among these, 301 developed a cold. The participants were divided into two groups: one utilized hypertonic saline nasal drops, while the other adhered to standard cold care measures, which included rest, hydration, and over-the-counter treatments. The findings were published in EurekAlert, and more information can be found here.

The outcomes were notable. Children who received the saline drops showed improvement in approximately six days, while those in the control group took about eight days to recover. That’s two additional days of discomfort that parents could potentially avoid!

    Why Hypertonic Saline Matters

The important distinction is that the saline used in the study was not ordinary saline spray; it was hypertonic saline with a 2.6% concentration of sodium chloride—higher than the standard 0.9% saline often found at drugstores. Participants in the study were instructed to administer three drops in each nostril, four times daily, for approximately five days.

So, what accounts for its effectiveness? The cells within our nasal lining utilize chloride to generate hypochlorous acid, which is crucial for combating viruses. Essentially, this solution may enhance the body’s ability to fend off infections. Additionally, saline is effective for alleviating nasal congestion, providing relief for little ones who are struggling to breathe comfortably.

Can This Help Curb Spread at Home?

If you’ve ever witnessed one child falling ill, you understand how rapidly sickness can spread among family members. Here’s a significant added benefit: The study revealed that the use of hypertonic saline not only expedited recovery but also appeared to minimize the likelihood of illness spreading to others in the household.

In families employing the saline treatment, only 46% reported other members becoming ill, in contrast to 61% in the group that did not use it. That’s a noteworthy difference!

Implications for Adults and Other Illnesses

While this study primarily focused on children under six, there is increasing evidence that hypertonic saline may also offer benefits for adults. Some researchers are investigating its potential effects on COVID-19, especially when used as a nasal rinse or gargle. Though further research is necessary, it could prove to be a valuable resource for families.

Should You Give It a Try?

Hypertonic saline is inexpensive, easy to apply, and generally available at most pharmacies without a prescription. Just ensure you select a hypertonic solution (check the sodium chloride concentration on the packaging), and as always, consult your pediatrician before trying out a new treatment.

While it may not serve as a universal remedy, hypertonic saline might just be the handy solution to keeping colds more manageable—and your family a bit healthier this season.
